MALPRACTICE at KELOWNA GENERAL HOSPITAL – (PART 1 – More to Follow)

Here is what happened to my Wife and the travesty she has suffered due to lack of Proper Patient Care after Hip Replacement Surgery at Kelowna General Hospital. A personal Registered letter was sent to the CEO – Susan Brown of Interior Health, to meet and discuss this mistreatment and lack of care. ZERO response from her, even after being given 14 legal days to respond. I had a one and a half hour meeting with 3 Directors from Kelowna General Hospital and got virtually a condescending letter with FALSE INFORMATION. My wife was to spend 4-10 days in the Kelowna General Hospital. Due to Licensed and Trained Nursing Staff (2 – RN’s and an LPN) mismanaging her care, she wound up with an 82 day stay in Kelowna General Hospital. I was in the Hospital for 75 days to ensure My Wife would be safe from further mis-treatment. We have been Fighting this for over 2 YEARS NOW and NOTHING!! So, now I am Posting to protect and CAUTION others!! Three Law Firms have told us we have a Medical Malpractice case but due to our age, being Seniors retired on fixed income, with NO future wage Earnings, and CANADIAN LAW, it was recommended to NOT pursue this case unless you are a high net worth individual like Elon Musk. WIFE’S HIP REPLACEMENT AT KGH JUNE 2021

  1. June 9th Hip Replacement and removal of hardware from broken Femur.
  2. June 11th. Got My Wife up 2 days later to start Physio June 12th. My Wife said she couldn’t feel pressure on her leg that had the hip replacement surgery
  3.  My Wife sent to have a CAT SCAN. Result, there was a small fracture
  4. June 15th Second hip surgery. Special Equipment order from Toronto for Second Surgery. Another 3 – 4 Hours.
  5. June 16th, 17th continual vomiting because of the Pain Killer, Hydromorphone, which she cannot take. Once removed and put on TRAMACET 325MG/37.5MG, she stopped vomiting and started eating.  She had not eaten for 3 days due to surgery and the effects of Hydromorphone.
  6. June 27th, I went to see My Wife. When I arrived, she said look at my leg. It was a good 1 to 2 inches shorter. The nurses had gotten her up on a portable potty. On moving her back to her bed, her leg was not supported properly and the new hip was dislocated. I knew this as I had seen this several times during my Military Service.
  7. June 28th. The Hospital GP came in and apologized to My Wife twice for not calling the Surgeon on the 27th when this happened. He did arrange for the X-Ray on the 27th. They X-rayed the hip and it was dislocated and nothing broken. Surgeon came in and told us they would be going back into the operation room either on June 29th or July 2. They would have to order new hardware and
this would be the last Operation. My Wife will NOW have to be on her back for 2 Weeks with No twisting or getting up.
  8. July 2nd, I the afternoon, the THIRD hip replacement surgery was done. My Wife and I were informed, by the Surgeon, when this is done it will be a long recovery of 8 weeks. She cannot put any load baring weight on her leg until August 27. We were both informed she cannot move or do anything that could cause that joint to pop. The Surgeon told both my wife and I that If it pops
out again, there is nothing more other than a wheel chair as she will have NO HIP. She must lie on her back flat for 2 weeks and no Twisting movement or getting out of bed.
  9.  July 3rd, approximately 14 hours after Surgery, I was again in visiting My Wife and Physio came in and said we have to get you up. I stopped them and informed them you are NOT to move her. Go check with the Surgeon and the nurses Station.
  10.  July 4th, Physio again tried to get her up. My Wife informed them she is NOT to be moved. They left and have not come back as of July 4th.
  11.  July 5th Around 8:30 AM the Anesthesiologist came in and was going to remove a Fentanyl line. He then instructed that the patient be put on a Fentanyl patch for 3 days for the pain. Also, on July 5, a Nurse came in and wanted to get My Wife up. I informed the Head Nurse she CANNOT be moved for 2 weeks as per DR. KURTZ and DR. DEMCOE, the Orthopedic Surgeons who did the 3rd
Operation. She said she was Head Nurse and in charge. I said that may be so, but you ARE NOT moving my wife until you check with these Surgeons. She then left in a huff.
  12. July 5th I returned home around 11:00 AM. At 11:57 AM My Wife called in severe pain and said they ordered the Fentanyl patch but it hadn’t arrived.
  13.  July 5th at 12:58 PM My Wife called in agonizing pain to say she had not gotten the Fentanyl patch Yet.
  14. July 5th at 1:38 My Wife called and said they put the patch on and she was requesting additional pain medication as this wasn’t doing anything yet.
  15.  July 5. I called Shelley, of Dr. KURTZ’s office, and informed her how Physio and the Head Nurse were trying to move my wife, after the Surgeons had instructed the medical staff that my Wife was NOT to be moved for 2 weeks, at which time a new X-ray would be done. Shelley emailed the Surgeons and the Next Day ALL NURSING/MEDICAL staff were FULLY AWARE and Informed of the seriousness of moving her.
  16.  July 5th at 2:38 PM My Wife texted “Hi Hon, I had a Fentanyl patch put on and had a Hydromorphone shot in the arm. I am starting to feel my body calming down ever so slowly. When it has then I will be asleep for a while. I will call you when I wake up.  Love you”
  17. July 6th at 10:28 AM Shelley called me and informed me that Dr. KURTZ had delivered SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS again, that my wife is NOT TO BE MOVED AT ALL, until after a Post Op X-ray is taken on the 16th of July.
  18. Aug. 2.  My Wife had early morning bowel movement. Nurse did not clean her properly. Left her in stained and soiled sheets on bed. Another Nurse notice this during her normal back being washed. At around noon today, Nurse came in and gave her the wrong size of medication. My Wife had to correct this. SHAMEFUL.
  19. Aug. 8th AM, Physio got My Wife up and into a wheel chair. Two people were used to do this as per the Surgeon’s orders due to the severity of her surgery. 2 people will ALWAYS be required to get My Wife in and out of bed or wheel chair, as per the Surgeon’s instructions. When the wheel chair sitting was done, as requested by Physio, My Wife asked to be put back into her bed.  One Nurse came in and said OK let’s go dear, I can help you. My Wife  immediately informed the Nurse 2 people have to move her as she cannot do that, and must have 2 People at ALL times to move her, as per the Surgeon’s order. This type of behavior is what caused my Wife to have her 3rd Surgery. They popped her hip joint out, last time doing this without following the proper procedures for getting in and out of the Bed. The
Nurse replied oh Yes, sorry, I’ll get someone else to help. She was SAFELY put back into her bed.
  20. Aug. 18 to Aug. 27 Every day I was there, when My Wife had to be moved from the bed to wheel chair, they would try to only use one person, even though the Surgeon had written 2 People at ALL times when transferring the patient. If I had not been there, my wife would now be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. DISPICABLE.
  21. Aug. 9 At 6:45 PM My Wife rang to have her diaper changed due to urination. Female Nurse came in and said she would be right back to change her. 45 minutes later she still had not returned. Another staff person then came in and changed My Wife, over 45 minutes after the Nurse had said she would be right back at 6: 45 PM. The Nurse had gone home and informed NO ONE that My Wife needed a change of Diaper. SHAMEFUL and DISGUSTING.
  22.  Aug. 10 Physio came in to put My Wife in a wheel chair. Physio wanted her and ONE person to do this. PHYSIO was informed again, by me, that in order for ANY Transfer TWO PEOPLE are required to move My Wife.
  23. Aug. 13 My Wife has X-ray at 8:30 AM arranged by Dr. KURZ. We were told, by the Hospital staff previously, this X-Ray would be on the 16th of Aug.
  24. Aug. 14 At 3:30 My Wife asked for ice pack for pain on her hip. Nurse said she would get someone to get one for My Wife as the Nurse was going on a break. Ice Pack came at for My Wife at 4:14 after she had her break. No one came with an ice pack until then.
  25. Aug. 15-26 Every day an employee of KGH had to be told it takes 2 People to Transfer My Wife. For the last week of her stay, Physio had me, her husband, be their Second Person.
  26. Aug. 27. My Wife walked for the first time.   🙂
  27. Aug. 28 My Wife walked up the stairs at Physio.
  28. Aug. 29 Physio released My Wife and My Wife comes home. 🙂
